The Zoji-La pass has been inaugarated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his Jammu & Kashmir visit. The would be Asia’s longest tunnel is going to be 14.15 kms long and worth Rs 6809 crore. The expected time of completion is 5 years. “I’m confident that it will be completed during your (Modi’s) tenure as prime minister,” Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti made this remark at the birth centenary celebration of the 19th Kushok Bakula Rinpoche.
The tunnel is going to cut down a drive time of 3.5 hours to 15 minutes through the mountains. The Zoji-La pass is situated at a height of 11,578 feet. The pass remains closed during winter. “The new Zoji-la Tunnel is aimed to provide a year long connectivity between Kashmir to Ladakh. The construction of this tunnel will provide all-weather connectivity between Srinagar, Kargil and Leh and would lead to all-round economic and socio-cultural integration of these regions” , said Mr. Narendra Modi.
All the carbon dioxide accumulated in the tunnel will be sucked up by a tower which will be 7 times higher than the Qutub Minar. “The Zojila tunnel has been planned as a smart tunnel. It will have latest safety features like fully transverse ventilation system, uninterrupted power supply (UPS), tunnel emergency lighting, CCTV monitoring, variable message signs (VMS), traffic logging equipment, over height vehicle detection, tunnel radio system, etc,” are the words of a spokesperson as reported by NDTV.
“Jammu and Kashmir is going to get development projects worth Rs 25,000 crore. These projects will have a positive impact on the people of the state. Today projects worth Rs 25,000 crore will either be dedicated to the nation or the foundation stone will be laid. This shows that New Delhi is completely dedicated to all-round development of state,” further added the Prime Minister. Mr. Nitin Gadkari also assured that the 90% employees for the project will be taken from the local areas.
