The new hatchback codenamed as Y1K of the Maruti Suzuki will be launched in the auto markets of India in 2019. The Y1K hatchback is the production version of the future S concept which was showcased in the Auto Expo, 2018. This is as per reported by the Economic Times Auto. It suggests the upcoming hatchback will be feature styling clues from the SUV. Maruti Suzuki India is likely to launch their new hatchback sometime around the festive season next year.
The upcoming Maruti K1Y is going to be a hatchback under the crossover-ish skin similar to the Kwid. The new Maruti’s hatchback will be positioned below the Maruti Ignis adding to the comprehensiveness of the Maruti’s SUV portfolio. The Maruti K1Y hatchback will come equipped with standard dual front air bags, reverse parking sensors and ABS in order to abide by the upcoming safety norms. Moreover, the hatchback is likely to borrow components from the Maruti’s Alto and Swift offerings.
Talking about small cars as a whole, Maruti’s managing director Kenichi Ayukawa said, “small cars will continue to be the focus of the company. This is after Maruti has done well with mid-sized SUVs and sedans and has increased its margins and profits in the last two years. So why the Y1K?”“Small is beautiful and good enough for a product,” Ayukawa had told a publication earlier this year. “Customer demand is changing very fast. Any time, they want an affordable and good product… that is a basic. With the economic situation in the country changing, minds of customers are also changing. We have to find out what they are expecting. But affordability continues to be a very important aspect. That remains the bottom line of the Indian market,” Ayukawa said about changing preference of the Indian consumers.
The new Y1K hatchback is expected to get power from a 1.0 litre K 10 series three cylinder petrol engine, coming updated to the BSIV emission norms. The petrol motor produces a power of 68 PS and 90 Nm torque in its current state of tune. The engine will come paired to either a five speed manual transmission or five speed AMT transmission. It is expected of Maruti Suzuki to offer Y1K hatchback excellent value for money because of the company’s well established dealership networks, economics of sale and deep understanding of the market. It is supposed that the Maruti Y1K hatchback will be named Zen. When launched, the Maruti Y1K will compete with the upcoming hatchback from Hyundai and the Renault Kwid.
