Maruti’s tall boy refuses to die, Tiago has been on the free run for some time now, and Hyundai breathes life back into the Santro, heating the battle in the budget hatchback segment. How do they fare? lets find out in this Maruti WagonR Vs Tata Tiago Vs Hyundai Santro head to head.
Maruti WagonR Vs Tata Tiago Vs Hyundai Santro: The Platform
The 2019 Maruti WagonR, currently in its 3rd generation, is underpinned by a HEARTECT platform. The old WagonR was known for its spacious interior, yet city friendly dimensions. The new WagonR takes that game to top gear. The Tata Tiago is based on the heavily modified X1 platform that is derived from the Indica. It was the model that set TATA’s cash registers ringing. Based on the IMPACT design philosophy, Tata managed to entice the customers in the passenger car segment, who were unlikely to turn towards TATA otherwise. The all-new Santro is based on the entirely new K1 platform. Hyundai is looking to ride high on with looks of the original i10 and the name from Santro, both of which were a hit with the Indian masses.
The Tiago, with the extended smiling grill or humanity line that stretches all the way to the wrap around projector headlamps, strong character lines that merge with the tail lamps are the ‘fantastico’ elements of this car. The 2019 update brings in projector headlamps, dual tone roof that adds a sporty feel to the small car. The Tiago also comes in an angrier, JTP avatar.
The WagonR has always been a boxy car, with a function-over-form attitude. The new model represents a significant shift in design theme. The divided headlamps, bolder grille, floating roof illusion, and prominent x-mas tree headlights inject much-needed freshness to a very strong brand.
The Santro too adopts tallboy construction as its predecessors, but boomerang curves and few quirky bits add a more youthful appeal, which otherwise would have been an i10.
