Volvo cars launched the much-awaited luxury SUV – Volvo XC40 based on the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) on 4th July 2018 in India. With an introductory price of Rs. 39.9 lakhs, the XC40 is built for the competitive and growing luxury SUV market in India. With its class-leading list of technologies and features, the Volvo XC40 will be at the top of the list of prospecting buyers in this market.
“The XC40 is our first offering in the entry-level SUV segment and with this, Volvo completes its range across all luxury SUV segments – Compact, Mid-size, and Full-size,” said Charles Frump, Managing Director, Volvo Car India. “It has an edgy design and a host of segment-first intuitive technology that makes life less complicated. The launch of XC40 and our aggressive dealer expansion of 1 new dealer per month this year are the key success factors in achieving our ambition of doubling segment share by 2020.”
The Volvo XC40 is perfectly proportionate with the blend of every elements. Yes, it’s very fresh, muscular, stylish, modern and has a hell lot of road presence. When you drive it through the road, all eyes will roll around you. Its exactly the SUV people are looking out for. The Volvo heritage design has been more upmarket now. The Thor hammer LED DRLs gives a bold appealing stance. The Grill here is not chrome, they are all black steel concave grill. It gives a muscular identity with the Volvo emblem in the center. The side profile is very plain with no extra drama to it.
The black roof with full panoramic sunroof merges with the rear spoiler while giving out a dual tone floating roof style. And the signature Volvo tail lamps cluster won’t go unnoticed either. Other small details like the diamond cut alloy wheel adds a certain charm to this car. The SUV is offered in three colors – Crystal White Metallic, Bursting Blue Metallic and Fusion Red Metallic. The Volvo XC40 is 4425 mm long, 2034 mm wider and 1622 mm tall. It comes with class leading 211 mm of ground clearance.
Ian Kettle, lead exterior designer quoted, “This is a car with a strong character. From day one I referred to it as the ‘Tough Little Robot’. It’s about its stance, surfacing and its sense of playfulness”. Volvo says that youthful design combined with SUV proportions has created a car that makes a bold statement.
The XC40 gets more exciting on the inside with contrasting colors and retro touch in the AC vents. The XC40 is offered in two interior option – Leather Charcoal with Lava Orange tone and All Black Leather Charcoal which oozes with plush luxurious feel. The cockpit looks subtle and upmarket. The driver instrument cluster get a 12.3″ inch display unit while the center infotainment system is a 9″ display unit which looks outstanding and distinctive compared to its rivals.
The new XC40 is filled to the brim with features to complement its stunning looks. The vertical touchscreen infotainment system in the center is similar to the likes of the XC60. It is intuitive and offers all the necessary features including Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Volvo has installed a 600-watt Harman/Kardon surround sound system which includes 13 speakers and a subwoofer. Volvo has taken a unique approach to design the speaker positioning. The door speakers are moved from the conventional bottom position. They are instead placed next to the door handles. This approach increases the door storage space. The subwoofer is placed in the front dashboard which increases the audio listening experience.
The digital instrument cluster and the steering wheel are borrowed from the XC60 and the XC90 and are great. The car also gets loads of storage spaces and cup holders. It also includes a wireless charging area for smartphones. There are air conditioning vents for the rear seats. The rear seats also get seat warmers. The panoramic sunroof is a nice added touch. The SUV has first-in-segment powered boot lid for your convenience.
Volvo is know for its top notch safety standard across the globe. The SUV gets tons of safety equipment to ensure maximum safety. It gets 7 airbags as standard. Along with this, Volvo has included class-leading features under radar-based safety. Additionally, the SUV also includes first-in-segment features like steering assist (up to 50km/h) which also avoids collision from other vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and large animals. The adaptive cruise control helps the car maintain safe speeds on highways. Other features include on-coming lane mitigation, driver alerts, run-off road protection and roll stability control. The car also includes a protective safety cage which helps save the occupants in the event of a crash.
Engine and Transmission:
The XC40 is powered by a 2 liter 4-cylinder twin-turbo diesel engine. It produces 190hp and 400Nm of peak torque. This engine is mated to an 8-speed Geartronic transmission. XC40 also gets all-wheel drive.
Volvo has included different driving modes – Eco, Comfort, Dynamic, Off-Road. It also gets individual modes that provide various settings to tailor the driving experience from luxurious to adventurous.

The SUV also has a fresh new design and has head-turning road presence. Additionally, the SUV is available with the R-Design variants which is a feature loaded variant, priced at INR 39.90 Lakhs. At this price the SUV is truly justified with its offerings compared to its rivals. The SUV will rival against BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA and Audi Q3.
