Volvo has commenced an ongoing Vision 2020 safety campaign which aims at improving the safety of its models and decreasing the number of accidents. The reputed Swedish luxury carmaker develops superior cars which have a great blend of safety and innovative design. By starting the new campaign, the company intends to develop cars with high-level safety features so that no one is killed or severely wounded in a Volvo model.

As a part of the safety campaign, Volvo has planned to fix a speed limit of 180kph (112mph) in all its latest models. So, by 2020 the company aims to reduce the number of Volvo car accidents to zero. However, this might seem challenging and something next to impracticable as well, but we cannot refuse that the idea is great. As most of the customers look for safe cars, this is a great step of the Swedish automotive manufacturer.

In an official report from the company, it is confirmed that the upcoming 2020 Volvo models will be restricted to just 112mph (180km/h), in order to lessen the road collisions. Volvo’s chief safety experts, Jan Ivarsson, said, “As humans, we all understand the dangers with snakes, spiders and heights. With speeds, not so much. People often drive too fast in a given traffic situation and have poor speed adaption in relation to that traffic situation and their own capabilities as a driver. We need to support better behaviour and help people realise and understand that speeding is dangerous.”

According to Volvo’s President Håkan Samuelsson, “Because of our research we know where the problem areas are when it comes to ending serious injuries and fatalities in our cars. And while a speed limitation is not a cure-all, it’s worth doing if we can even save one life. We want to start a conversation about whether car makers have the right or maybe even an obligation to install technology in cars that changes their driver’s behaviour, to tackle things like speeding, intoxication or distraction. We don’t have a firm answer to this question, but believe we should take leadership in the discussion and be a pioneer.”

A few years back, Thomas Broberg, the company’s safety advisor described some of the technologies which can be under progress and expanded. The technologies which are present in the latest Volvo models are pedestrian and animal detection, road edge and barrier detection, self-parking and vehicle-to-vehicle communication. These safety features are developed under Volvo’s City Safety System which is equipped in some special models like S60, XC60, XC70, and S80.

Volvo has said that the main reason for road accidents is rash driving. Drug and drink intoxication and the mobile phone also results in increasing death by road collisions. The company will also introduce a new feature, geofencing which is a virtual geographic limit determined by GPS. It will avoid the collision with a pedestrian and slow the car while passing schools and hospitals. After Volvo, other carmakers can also think about introducing the speed limit in their cars in future.
