After releasing several teasers of the new SUV, Volkswagen has finally unwrapped the next-generation T-Cross. It is the leading smallest SUV manufactured by the German automaker. The all-new SUV was unveiled at Amsterdam in an event. It is placed after the T-Roc in the range. The new VW SUV is developed on the MQB A0 platform. The company will sell this mid-spec SUV only in European automotive markets. The company has offered two wheelbase choices for this new model. The enlarged variant is likely to be delivered in South America, India and China, uncovered in Brazil. VW will not bring T-Cross in the U.S as small SUV don’t have great demand in the country. The model with larger wheelbase is built on a revised platform of the MQB A0 concept.
In terms of designing, it is highly based on the ongoing Volkswagen Virtus traded in South America (also expected to come to India). From the front, the vehicle has received some aspects from the other European models of the German company. It is outfitted with bold headlamps combined in the grille. It also features LED DRL’s enclosed with the chrome detailing. The chrome assents are also provided on the grille and front bumper.
The front bumper is equipped with rubberised body cladding highlighting centre faux aluminium trim. It is more sporty from the side section featuring compact body cladding all over the exterior. The smaller SUV is integrated with new LED tail-lamps and parallel lighting on the rear. The T-Cross also received an appealing roof option. It measures 4.19m in length along with 2.65m wheelbase and 1.56m height.
Moving inside the cabin, it is integrated with dashboard shared with a 10.2-inch digital instrument console and 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system on the dash. The cabin is decorated with ambient lighting which gives a premium touch. It features automatic park assist and a panoramic sunroof as well. The company has offered a drive mode selector which will ease the driving experience.
The cabin will be spacious with more legroom and headroom. The rear passenger seat also gets legroom and sliding seats. It is packed with many high-level safety features such as lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, 6 airbags, ABS, EBD and ESP, and an anti-collision system with pedestrian detection. The company will definitely cut some of the safety features from the Indian variant considering the price.
The VW SUV is powered by a 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine which will generate 94 bhp power and 114 bhp also on offer. The company also offers a 1.6-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder engine that will deliver 94 bhp power. It is also expected to come with a 1.5-litre petrol unit in future. The T-Cross will be available in 5 or 6-speed manual gearbox or a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. It will compete against the likes of Nissan Kicks, the Tata Harrier, Renault Captur and the Hyundai Creta.
