The automotive industry is huge, selling millions of passenger cars every year. Interestingly, India stands 5th in the total number of cars manufactured. With other countries like China and the USA making way more cars year after year. Here is a list of the top companies worldwide by the volume of cars sold. All of them have multiple divisions or subsidiaries to help in the distribution of cars worldwide.
The Japanese giant is not only the biggest automaker in the world right now, but it is also the sixth-largest company in the world by revenue. It brings in a revenue of more than $270 billion. It also employs over 3,40,000 employees. Toyota was also the first company to sell 200 million cars back in 2012. It owns two subsidiaries and a business unit – Daihatsu, Hino, Lexus and the Toyota division itself.
2. Volkswagen AG
This German company is also among the first few to reach an annual production capacity of 10 million units. With annual revenue of more than $270 billion, it is also at the top in terms of revenue. It also boasts of over 3,00,000 employees working at any time. Apart from selling cars under its own name brand, VW is also very well known for the other premium and luxury subsidiaries it owns. These include the bigshot names like Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Ducati, Lamborghini, Porsche, Skoda, Seat, Scania, and MAN. It also owns a business unit called VTB in some parts of the world.
3. Hyundai Motors
Hyundai Group is a South Korean giant company, which interestingly started as a construction company. Hyundai Motors was born in 1967 and is now one of the top 10 in the automotive industry. It gets an annual revenue of about $224.1 billion and also employs over 2,50,000 employees. The company also owns other subsidiaries like Genesis and Kia only for certain markets and produces around 5 million units every year.
4. General Motors
GM may have left India, but it still has a top spot in the worldwide scene. It is the biggest automaker in the US and owns several other subsidiaries like Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Holden, and also the Chinese business units – Jiefang and SAIC-GM. It also has another business unit called GM Uzbekistan for Russia and Middleeast. It has a production output of over 8 million units a year and brings in a revenue of $147.049 billion annually. The company also employs over 1,73,000 employees.
This is also another big name in the US. We have also heard the story of Henry Ford and the first Model T. But the Indian market has not been kind to Ford with a market share of just 3%. Mahindra now takes care of the operations of Ford in India, allowing it to still exist. But from a worldwide perspective, Ford is doing great. It has an annual revenue of over $160 billion. It also manufactures about 6 million units of cars every year while employing over 2,00,000 people.
Nissan is one of the biggest Japanese companies in the automotive industry apart from Toyota and also one of the top 10 in the world. It is headquartered in Yokohama, Japan. The company has an annual production capacity of over 5.5 million units. It also pulls an annual revenue of over $109 billion while employing over 1,42,000 professionals across the globe. Nissan is well known for making some of the best JDM sports cars like the iconic GT-R which is in the hearts of every motoring enthusiast. Nissan also has a division called Datsun and a subsidiary called Infinity for a select few markets.
This is another Japanese giant in the worldwide top 10 list. Honda was born back in 1948 and now has its headquarters in Tokyo, Japan. The company is very well known for introducing the VTEC technology which in sorts revolutionized the balance between performance when required and efficiency when required. Even today, Honda fans swear by this technology. Honda has only one other division called Acura which makes some premium performance cars like the NSX. The company incurs a revenue of about $140 billion with an annual production capacity of about 5 million units. It also employs close to 2,15,000 professionals.
8. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles
Also known as FCA, it is the parent company of one of the most widely recognized offroader – Jeep. It was born in 1899 at Turin, Italy but now has its headquarters in London, UK. It also has an annual production capacity of over 5 million cars. The company also gets an annual revenue of about $130 billion dollars with over 2,35,000 employees. FCA sells its cars across many subsidiaries like Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Maserati, Fiat, Abarth, Lancia, and Fiat Professional. FCA now also has intentions to merge with Groupe PSA which owns brands like Citroen and Peugeot) on a 50-50 all stock basis.
Renault is a French auto maker born in 1899 and also takes a place in the top 10 manufacturers of the automotive industry. It has its headquarters at Boulogne-Billancourt, near Paris. The company boasts of an annual production output of over 4.1 million units. It also owns other subsidiaries like Alpine, Dacia, Lada in select markets. The company receives an annual revenue of $ 62 billion with over 1,81,000 employees. Renault is also famous in the motorsport scenes like Formula 1, Formula E and also rallying.
10. Groupe PSA
Groupe PSA is another French multinational auto maker. It owns well known subsidiary brands like Citroen and Peugeot. The company was founded in 1976 in Paris, France but now has its HQ in Rueil-Malmaison. The company has an annual production capacity of over 3.7 million units and brings in a revenue of about $81 billion. Some other brands Groupe PSA owns are DS, Opel and also Vauxhall.
