In what comes as an unexpected move, Tesla has released all of the company’s patents to the public. According to Elon Musk, anyone who wants to save the Earth can make use of their technology for free.
Elon took to Twitter to say “All our patent are belong [sic] to you”. Enclosed in the tweet is a link to a blog post written by Elon Musk himself back in June 2014. Musk says he is skeptical about patents which more than often hamper progress. He feels progress in the EV department is crucial to saving the plant in the long run.

In the blog post, Musk says that all the patents in the lobby of their Palo Alto HQ are removed. They are now open source in the spirit to encourage the development of electric vehicle technology. He also says that Tesla will not issue patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good faith, wants to use their technology.
This changes the way the entire world looks at patents in a way. Musk admitted that in the beginning, he had to resort to using patents to prevent bigger car companies from using their technology to take over the market and make more profit. But with Tesla’s car production running at 100 million units a year, he feels it is impossible for them to build electric cars fast enough to address the carbon crisis.
” Our true competition is not the small trickle of non-Tesla electric cars being produced, but rather the enormous flood of gasoline cars pouring out of the world’s factories every day.”, Musk said, “We believe that Tesla, other companies making electric cars, and the world would all benefit from a common, rapidly-evolving technology platform.”
