Tata Motors has finally announced the seven-seater SUV variant based on the Tata Harrier. With the announcement also comes the official name of the SUV, it will be called Tata Gravitas. As Tata is pretty good with the teasing game, we have a silhouette of the upcoming Gravitas.
When the SUV was showcased at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, it carried its name as Buzzard. But Tata has other plans as the video is title ” Luxury has A name” i.e. Gravitas. Gravitas will be the second vehicle built on Tata’s Modular OMEGA (Optimal Modular Efficient Global Advanced) platform after the Harrier. This platform has its fair bit of Land Rover’s DNA in it.
It will have almost the same front fascia as the Harrier but the main change will be at the rear. To accommodate 7 seats it will have a longer overhang and redesigned rear end. We also expect Tata to equip it with sunroof which is missing on the Harrier. And all the small niggles or shortcoming of the Harrier will be ironed out in the Gravitas.
The engine will be the same as Harrier but in a better state of tune and comply to BS6. The Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel unit will make 170ps and 350 Nm of torque. Also, the Gravitas is expected to get automatic transmission right from the start which will be a torque converter unit sourced from Hyundai, along with the 6-speed manual.
The Launch is scheduled for February 2020, which also means that Tata can launch the Gravitas at the Auto Expo 2020. Tata seems to have multiple launched lined up, right from the Nexon EV next month, Tata Altroz in January 2020 and the Gravitas in February 2020. The pricing will be higher than the Harrier, and then Gravitas will be Tata’s Flagship SUV on sale.
