The Tata Motors’ sub brand TaMo (Tata Motors short form), was launched last year at the Geneva Motor Show and announced their RaceMo project. By the July of the previous year it was announced that the costs were too much to bear hence the project was cancelled. But later the authorities confirmed that no such thing had happened. But this time its for real the TaMo has cancelled the launch of their RaceMo project.
Earlier this year the TaMo race car was showcased at the Auto Expo, in February. A electric variant of the same was also present their. In the word of the Chief Financial Manager , Tata Motors, Mr PB Balaji, ” There are projects at this point of time that we think do not have economic value, for example we have stopped the TaMO RaceMo.” Tata Motors have also announced that the Tamo will now be working in development of manufacturing units, prouction concept, business models and technologies. The sportscar was supposed to come at Rs. 25 lakhs.
The racecar was fuelled by a 1.2 litre Revotron petrol engine, which was exclusive for the Bolt and Zest variants. The engine made a power of 190 ps. It hits the 100 kmph mark in 6 seconds. An AMT 6 speed transmission system with paddleshifters came mated with the engine. The interiors had 3 7 inch TFT screens powered by Microsoft and a Made In Mumbai logo. Composite plastic and aluminium built RaceMo was expected to weight below 800 kgs, in order to maintain the power to weight ratio. Marcello Gandini was the man behind the design and construction of the chassis of the RaceMo.
This isn’t the first time the Tata Motors have announced a sportscar launch and eventually cancelled it. Keeping our fingers crossed, we definitely don’t want the RaceMo to end up like the other. In the year 2000, the Aria sportscar concept was announced at the Geneva Motor Show followed by the Aria coupe concept at the same show the next year. None of the concepts saw the light of the day.
