Alfa Romeo is returning to the 2019 season of Formula 1. F1 Sauber team will be rebranded as Alfa Romeo Racing. This brings a legendary name back to the race tracks.
Although the name is changing, the management will remain the same as Sauber. The team’s headquarters will also remain in Switzerland instead of Italy. Also, the cars will continue to use the Ferrari engine. So the change is name is a little odd as Alfa Romeo will not be supplying any parts for the car.
F1 champion Kimi Raikkonen will drive for Alfa Romeo Racing in the 2019 season after giving up his Ferrari seat to Charles Leclerc. Kimi has signed a two year contract with Alfa Romeo. He will be racing alongside former Ferrari test driver Antonio Giovinazzi in 2020.
Alfa Romeo was a big competitor in the early years of F1. They won the first F1 championship title back in 1950 with Giuseppe Farina. The very next year also was in Alfa Romeo’s favor with Juan Manuel Fangio bagging the win.
Team principal Frederic Vasseur said: “After initiating the collaboration with our title sponsor Alfa Romeo in 2018, our team made fantastic progress on the technical, commercial and sporting side. This has given a boost of motivation to each team member.
As interesting it is to see Alfa Romeo return to the F1 business, it is also sad to see Sauber leaving. Sauber has been a part of the F1 fixtures since 1993. 2019 F1 will be an interesting season to watch with these developments.
