Finally, RE Motorcycles Thunderbird brand is coming with an update on Thunderbird series with RE Thunderbird 500X, spied at dealership in Belgaum, Karnataka. Thunderbird series have been most liked cruiser bike at present in Indian market with least competitors and now RE has extended its offering with RE Thunderbird. However, no official launch dates has been confirmed from RE, though from the picture you can see the production ready Thunderbird 500X in dealership, which makes clear the launch in near months.
Royal Enfield motorcycles are always a class above and are signs of pride ownership still its lacks a lot in comparison to the motorcycles with same displacements in the market. The bikes are too bulky and heavy due to all iron body and this raises the drag and decreases the pickup, power output and decreases the speed. (remember the add Bajaj made for the Dominar 400 ). However, RE is also working in all this and now they tried to add more features to their motorcycles and Thunderbird 500X is one of the examples.
The Thunderbird 500X which is spied in Belgaum has been updated with color scheme. The cruiser comes with Redditch editions, same as Classic 350 with a glossy black base coat with fuel tank color option of – Red, Yellow, Blue and white fuel tanks. This time the silencer is fully matte black instead of chrome finish. The side panels have badging as “500X” instead of “Thunderbird 500”. The wheels too have been updated with 10 spoke alloy wheels which have fuel tank matching reflectors. Front wheel has 19 Inch alloys whereas the rear has 18 inch alloy and the braking is done with 280 mm single disc at the front and 240 mm single disc at the rear wheel and which comes with tubeless tyres. The seats are also changed from the regular split seats and have been updated with one piece seating. The backrest has been removed and has been replaced with side handlebars to catch hold your bike when idle. Though it’s not sure if there is any option to attach a backrest but the backrest was giving a complete look earlier. The cruiser has now an updated flat handle bars, though the projector headlamps with Day time Running Lights and LED tail lamp remains same. The suspension systems too re same and are borrowed from Thunderbird 500 comprising telescopic front fork and twin rear shock absorbers. The speedometer and fuel meter are still the same analog meters from its brothers. What we expected is a digital one like all other bikes have started giving out there.
The engine though has no mechanically changes and the bike is powered with the same 499 CC, fuel injection, single cylinder BS-IV compliant engine which is used across RE 500 bikes. Which churns out a maximum of 27 bhp at 5250 rpm and a peak torque of 41.3 Nm at 4000 rpm, mated with 5 speed gearbox and the top speed is expected to 130 to 140 kmph.
The bike is expected to be launched in January or February 2018 with an expected price tag of around 2.10 to 2.30 lakhs basis the updated alloy wheels and tubeless tyres as the current version of Thunderbird 500 is priced at 1.9 lakhs (Ex-showroom, delhi). The more details will be available once the bike is officially launched and once we have hands-on upon it.
