Revolt - India's first electric motorcycle, but is it worth your money?

Revolt motorcycles have a very unique pricing strategy. You do not pay for the motorcycle upfront. But instead, you pick a My Revolt Plan based on your preference and pay a monthly charge for a period of 37 months. It is almost like buying a subscription, but for a motorcycle instead of a streaming service! But is it worth putting your hard earned money into it? Stick around to know our verdict.

What is My Revolt Plan?

The company is planning to stick to this unique strategy. They do not even have an ex-showroom price for the motorcycle other than the monthly charges. There are three available plans – Rs 2999/month, Rs 33499/month, and Rs 3999/month. The lowest plan will get you an RV300 model and the total cost will work out to about Rs 1,11,000. The most expensive plan will get you a premium RV400 model and will cost you about Rs 1,30,000 at the end of 37 months.

Sounds pretty cheap? There’s more. The company also highlighted the approximate cost of ownership of Rs 90,000 petrol motorcycle over the course of 3 years. This works out to Rs 2,54,000 (approx) including the cost of motorcycle, insurance, registration, finance, petrol, and servicing. The company also boasts of free insurance and service. There is also no limit on the number of battery switches. So all this sounds great. Should I just walk into a showroom tomorrow and book one? Let’s take a step back and look at the issues and how Revolt plans to fix them.

Let’s talk concerns

The biggest concern with electric motorcycles is its range. With a maximum available range of 150 to 180kms, it is much less than what a petrol motorcycle with a full tank of fuel can manage to achieve. Then again, filling up a fuel tank is a matter of minutes, not hours. The company’s solution? Swappable batteries. There are a number of ways to make sure your motorcycle is full of juice. The simplest being plugging it into a wall charger. This takes about 4.5 hours for a full charge. No wall outlet near the motorcycle? Take the battery out and charge inside the house or office. Too slow or on the move? Swap your drained battery for a charged battery at one of the swap locations. Have a drained battery and can’t use any of the above methods? Get a battery delivered to you through the app.

That sounds like a good solution but only time will reveal its feasibility. The infrastructure and reachability of the swap stations should be top notch. The company should also ensure that damaged or defective batteries are not available at these swap stations. Battey warranty is capped at 8 years or 1.5 lakh kilometers which adds to the peace of mind of customers. The entire motorcycle has a warranty for 5 years or 75,000kms. Also, the service intervals are very long at 10,000kms. This is possible as there are very few moving parts in an electric motorcycle and no real consumables like engine oil.

Some features and tech

Even with what looks like a very small price tag, the motorcycle is filled to the brim with features. Let us start with the smart in it. The bike comes with something called Artificial Intelligence (AI) assistance. This comes along with a 4G sim feature that will keep you linked with it and guarantee convenient OTA (Over The Air) updates. The smartphone app can be used to check the battery status, remotely start the motorcycle, provide navigation support, order a new battery and also change the sound. Wait, did we just say change the sound in an electric motorcycle? Yes, the bike comes with speakers which can output a sound like a conventional petrol motorcycle. There a few different sounds to choose from or no sound if you prefer just the whine of the electric motor.

There are two motor options – 1.5kW Hub Motor in the RV300 and a 3kW Mid Drive Motor in the RV400. The RV300 model has ranges of 80kms (sport mode), 110kms (normal mode) and 180kms (eco mode). This model also has a battery with a 60V charger and takes roughly 4.2 hours for a full charge. The RV400, on the other hand, has lower ranges of 80kms (sport mode), 100kms (normal mode) and 150kms (eco mode). The 72V battery takes 4.5 hours for a full charge.

Other features include 240mm front and 240mm (RV400) or 180mm (Rv300) rear disc brakes, USD front forks, rear mono shock, LED head lamps with projector and LED tail lamps and indicators. The motorcycle sits either on 90/80-17 front and 110/80-17 rear (RV300) or 90/80-17 front and 120/80-17 rear (RV400) tires. The ground clearance is higher on the RV300 at 225mm compared to 215mm on the RV400.

Conclusion – yay or nay?

Now is it still a worthy purchase? It is definitely worth having a look at if you live either in Delhi or Pune. Customers in cities like Bangalore, Hyderabad, Nagpur, Ahmedabad, and Chennai have to wait longer to get their hands on one. There are also some other concerns which cannot be addressed at the moment. One of these is the after sales service which is a very important factor in the Indian market. Reliability and brand security are also in question as it is a new company out with their first product. But only if customers like you and me show more interest in new brands can they grow. We should also remember the government’s total electrification plan and know that Revolt is definitely a step in the right direction.
