Okinawa has been known for making electric two-wheelers in India. As of now, Okinawa has only scooters in its offering. But this year they plan to launch the Oki100 Electric bike in India, which was first showcased at the 2018 AutoExpo. The bike will launch as soon as the third quarter of the financial year 2020-21.
But the more interesting fat to talk about is that the Oki100 will be a 100% localized product. It will come under the initiative of ‘Make in India’ by PM Modi. This will also help Okinawa to price the bike competitively. The Oki100 is a competitive product, and Okinawa claims a top speed of 100km/hr. It will get a lithium ion-based battery which will also be manufactured locally in India.
As for the looks, the Oki100 looks like a little Ducati monster, or say somewhere along the lines of Honda’s Grom. But that was a concept and the production variant can look a lot different. Currently, Okinawa has 88% localization amongst its products, and Oki100 will be the first bike to get 100% localization.
Mr Jeetender Sharma- MD, Okinawa said “We welcome PM Modi’s vision of ‘vocal for local’. All the components of the electric motorcycle will be manufactured and sourced from local suppliers. We expect this to boost local suppliers’ domain and inspire all the EV startups to go ‘Vocal for local’,”
The bike when launched will directly compete with RV400. It will be exciting to see the pricing and battery range and other specs to see how it will stand against the competition. Oki100 should be priced somewhere around Rs 1 Lac. Recently Okinawa also resumed their operations with 25% workforce.
