A new standard for ISI Motorcycle Helmets has been introduced in India. This step by BIS, Bureau of Indian Standards is aimed at improving safety levels as well as to control the sale of spurious helmets. The current weight of the motorcycle helmets is 1.5 kg and as per the new standard for ISI Motorcycle Helmets the weight has to be reduced to 1.2 kg. Therefore the helmet manufacturers need to certify that the motorcycle helmet weighs 1.2 kg. This new move for mandatory use of standard for ISI Motorcycle Helmets will be implemented from 15th January, 2019.

Rajeev Kapur, President of the ISI Helmets Manufacturers Association commenting on the development, said, “This step will bring down the number of fatal road accidents and will curb malpractices and the sale of spurious and fake roadside helmets. In India, riders underestimate the role of helmet and tend to buy cheap headgear, which does not protect them well and this has worsened the situation and given rise to the substandard helmet manufacturers, however, the current move is likely to keep a strict check on the substandard and spurious helmets manufacturing.”

The process of acquiring BIS registration for the motorcycle helmet manufacturers have been made mandatory by the Ministry of Road Transport. The Road Transport Ministry has revised the rules for examining the new standard ISI Motorcycle Helmets. The tests are modified with verifying increased impact velocity, head injury criteria and use of kerbs stone anvil. The side impact tests under different conditions of temperature and humidity are included as well.
