The Motor Vehicles amendment bill 2019 was passed by both the houses of the parliament. The amendment calls for stricter penalties for road traffic violators. Nitin Gadkari stated that “This is not only a Motor Vehicle Act, but also a road safety bill. I believe it will cause a decline in accidents, the passing of this bill is a tribute to those who lost their lives in accidents”.

Serious penalties for defaulters under Motor Vehicle Amendment Bill 

The bill includes a sum of INR 5 lakhs for death and INR 2.5 lakhs for grievous injuries. A new provision for a fine of INR 10,000 for not allowing way to emergency vehicles is now in place. Other new inclusions include a fine of INR 10,000 for driving despite disqualification, penalties ranging from INR 1000-2000 for over speeding. You’ll be charged a penalty of INR 2000 for driving without insurance.

If you are caught without a helmet, you will have to shell out INR 1000. In addition, your license will be suspended for 3 months. More information is from the Motor Vehicle amendment bill is tabulated below

Under the new provisions of the Motor vehicle amendment bill, those who help the accident victims will be protected from criminal and civil liabilities. It also optional for them to disclose their identities to medical and police personnel. Common violations such as use of mobile phone while driving, jumping signals and driving on the wrong side will now fall under dangerous driving.

The issuance of licenses will now be computerized and no one shall be issues license till they pass the online test.
