MINI Countryman 2018 Launched in India

MINI has launched the all-new MINI Countryman in India at Rs 34.9 Lakh thus pitching it in the league of Compact luxury SUV’s like the BMW X1, Audi Q3, VW Tiguan, and the Mercedes-Benz GLA. Since this is the Made in India Countryman, it will be assembled at  BMW’s plant in Chennai which aides to reduced production costs. The Countryman takes on the likes of the Mini Cooper S in a rugged SUV form factor while still retaining the charm of a MINI. It’s equipped with four-wheel drive as standard and comes in three variants the Countryman SSD and the JCW Inspired.

The Countryman is a whole 20 cm longer than the standard MINI and was first showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo. The new MINI Countryman shares the same platform as the BMW X1. The SUV’ish stance, the beefed-up wheel arches and the high ground clearance make it look nothing like a MINI. The Countryman offers all the practicality of a MINI Clubman and yet has the ground clearance of a crossover. Thankfully it does hold on to certain unique “MINI only” elements such as a sculpted bonnet, dual-Tone paint scheme with body stripes and a cheeky profile accentuated by a host of MINI badges all around the car. Overall the MINI on steroids look is sure to pull a lot of rage from the PURE’ist MINI fans, but it does make a perfect allrounder and has a ton of potential to win the Indian buyer.

Along with the new interiors, it also offers a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system(S variant) and a Multi function steering wheel, 9-inch touchscreen for higher variants, MINI driving modes, Park Assistant, Heads-Up Display and Cruise Control. As for the safety equipment, the new Countryman gets six airbags, brake assist, lane assist, automatic headlamps and wipers, dynamic stability control, collision detection sensors, ABS, cornering brake control and run-flat tyres as standard.

As for the JCW variant, it gets the John Cooper Works leather steering wheel, Sports Seats, Harmon Kardon surround-system, MINI Find Mate and the MINI Wired Package. The MINI Wired Package offers a full Navigation System mated to a 9-inch touchscreen unit.

Engines and Highlights

Notably, the  Countryman Cooper SD derives the 2.0 Litre Diesel motor from the Cooper SD putting out an impressive 400 Nm of torque and 190 Bhp. It returns 19 Kmpl and this figure is more than enough to make it the hottest selling version of the MINI.

The Countryman S and the SD comes mated with an 8-speed automatic transmission while the JCW gets the new 9-speed transmission to supplement its sporty nature. The JCW also gets the John Cooper Works aerodynamic kit, rear spoiler and 18-inch JCW thrill spoke alloys.
