The bloodshed has started and it was expected, but it still feels bad to see the number zero being reported as a sale figure for a whole month. But that’s where the pandemic has brought us, expect to see a lot more of these zero figures when the other manufacturers report.
So MG Motor India, one of the recent entrants in India which only came last year, also went through the zero sales figure misery. MG Motor entered India with the hector in June 2019. So we cannot actually compare the sales figure on a YoY basis for MG. But MG Hector was doing pretty solid 3,000 to 4,000 units a month normally.
Although MG Motor resumed operations and manufacturing on a small scale in Halol in April 2020 last week. So if the lockdown ends May 17 or even if the restrictions are lifted the production can be ramped up to a normal pace again. MG Motor is also focussing on sanitization and social distancing in their organization.
MG Motor recently also retrofitted their Hector SUV as an Ambulance and gave it to healthcare authorities in Vadodara, Gujarat. It took them 10 days to modify the car with the help of Ahmedabad-based Natraj Motor Body Builders and MG India’s engineering team at Halol.
MG Motor has also been helping by other measures like partnering with Max Ventilator for increasing production, donated 100 Hector Suvs to doctor, medical staff and giving Rs 2 Crore to the government hospital in Halol Gujarat.
MG Motor currently sells two cars in India – Hector and ZS EV. They even sold 116 units of ZS EV in March. But as lockdown has it we have to be prepared to see thee nil figures. But we hope the situation in May will improve and we will see some number flowing in.
