British manufacturer owned by Chinese company SAIC, MG Motor confirms the launch of an SUV by Q2 of 2019. This new SUV will compete against the likes of the Hyundai Creta.
The first MG, which was recently spied testing on Indian roads, will likely be based on the Baojun 530 as suggested by the teaser images. The Baojun 530 is a 5-seater SUV that debuted internationally in March 2018. It is the product of a partnership between SAIC, GM, and Wuling.
In China, the Baojun 530 is available in two engine options. A 1.5-litre turbo and a 1.8-litre naturally aspirated unit. In India on the other hand, we can expect a petrol and a diesel variant. The other option is a Fiat-derived 2.0-liter diesel engine. The 1.5-liter petrol engine produces around 168hp and 250Nm of torque. It is also mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission with a manual shifting option.
Features and Design
The car looks sharp and defined going by the teaser images and the spy shots. The teaser image also reads, “Made in India for Indians”. It will get premium interiors which includes a three-layered dashboard with a soft-touch material and contrast stitching. Also on offer is an infotainment system and a TFT multi-info display. It also gets more premium features like a panoramic sunroof and leather seats. The safety department will get the usual ABS system along with an electronic parking brake, power seats, and cruise control.
The car measures 4655mm long, 1835mm wide and 1760mm tall. This puts it above the Jeep Compass and the Hyundai Tucson in terms of size.
MG Motor reach across India
MG Motor will manufacture the car at the General Motors India plant at Halol in Gujarat. The company has a planned investment of USD 500 million (Rs 3,800 crores) for this. With heavy localization in place, the prices will be kept under check. MG will start selling their cars through the planned 45 dealerships across the country.
MG Motor also revealed the launch of an all-electric SUV in India in 2020. It will be similar to its other products on offer in the UK and China. More details on this are not revealed yet.
