Looks like Maruti is planning on entering the premium SUV market in India. Maruti Suzuki Vitara was spotted testing in new spy shots. This is one market where Maruti is weak. Yes, there is the Vitara Brezza but it is more of a compact SUV than a full sized SUV.
The premium SUV market in India is being flooded with a plethora of newcomers. The new Maruti Suzuki Vitara will compete against Hyundai Creta, MG Hector and also the latest Kia Seltos. It measures 4,175 mm long, 1,775 mm wide and stands 1,610 mm tall with 2,500 mm wheelbase and 185 mm unladen ground clearance.
The Vitara is much bigger than the Vitara Brezza on sale in the country. It will also come with an all-wheel drive system. In the international markets, the Suzuki Vitara comes with a variety of engine options including a 1.0 booster jet. There is also a 1.4-liter turbo-petrol, a 1.6-Liter naturally aspirated petrol and also a 1.6-Liter turbo diesel.
The spy shots show that the car is far from ready for production. The front grille is missing, probably to hide the logo. The logos on the wheels and other places are also taped off. We can also see a lot of wires hanging around in the interiors which are a part of numerous data-gathering sensors and computers.
Reports suggest the car will be priced between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 17 lakh. This begs the question of the success of the car. Maruti is always known for its cost effective cars. The last premium car Maruti tried selling in India, the Kizashi did not work out very well.
