After its astonishing presentation of electric and hybrid range, Maruti Suzuki has showcased the most awaited Jimny at the Auto Expo 2020. It seems that the company is ready to take over the SUV segment in the Indian automotive market. The model showcased is an enhanced wheelbase version, Suzuki Jimny Sierra. The model is already available in the European market, which has a remarkable wheelbase compared to the Japan-specs Kei car variant.
Jimny is a capable SUV by the two-wheeler maker which is the most compelling off-roading vehicle at an affordable price. The company has already taken off the iconic Gypsy from its India range, due to the upcoming emission norms. The report has also indicated that the company will replace Gypsy with the all-new Jimny in the country. Gypsy was based on Jimny in terms of underpinnings.
However, the company has no plans to bring the SUV in India for now. If launched, it will be sold through Maruti’s Nexa dealerships. It will be the most premium SUV available with robust built quality. The new Jimny is developed with many off-roading components. It gets a boxy silhouette and traditional designing elements including retro-styled round headlamps highlighting LED features. It is equipped with a five-slat grille, bold bumper, clam-shell hood, and front skid plate.
The make it a perfect off-roader, the company has adopted widened wheel arches, increased ground clearance, and side cladding along with tailgate-mounted spare wheels. The interior details and not revealed fully, but it is likely to get a semi-digital instrument panel, MID (multi-information display), and a large touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity support. It also features automatic AC and toggle switches.
Globally, Suzuki Jimny runs on a 1.5-litre petrol engine that delivers 100.5 bhp of max power and 130 Nm of peak torque, combined with a five-speed manual transmission or four-speed automatic gearbox on option. The Japan-specs (Sierra) is powered by a 660cc turbo-petrol unit which meets the current small-car regulations. The SUV’s off-roading capabilities are enhanced with three-link rigid axle suspensions with coil springs and 4WD system highlighting a low-range transfer gear.
In terms of safety, the European version Jimny features six airbags, hill hold control, hill descent control, brake assist system, lane departure warning system, ISOFIX child-seat mounts, a seat-belt reminder, ABS+AEB, and many more. It has also achieved a three-star rating from the Euro NCAP for safety. If launched in the country, the Jimny can be priced between Rs 7-8 lakhs (ex-showroom). Although, we have to wait for the company’s official announcement.
