After the announcement of Maruti Suzuki phasing out its diesel engine by 2020, people who love diesel might be disappointed. But Maruti may only phase out the smaller diesel engine, yes the decade-old Fiat 1.3 multijet, while the new 1.5 DDiS should still continue with the BS-VI version if there’s demand.
So, Maruti Suzuki has introduced the bigger 1.5 Diesel mill in the Ertiga today. Ertiga is the second car after the Ciaz to get the 1.5 DDiS engine. The new engine will not replace the 1.3-litre offering and will be offered alongside the smaller unit. The 1.5 diesel starts with the VDi variant and goes till ZDi+. The starting variant LDi is still only offered with 1.3 litre Diesel unit. There’s a price difference of almost Rs 30,000 between both VDi variants(with 1.3 and 1.5 engine).
Mr R.S. Kalsi, Senior Executive Director, Marketing and Sales, Maruti Suzuki India said, “Considering the requirements of evolving customers, the NextGen Ertiga is now offered with the new 1.5-litre Diesel engine. The new engine is a perfect combination of performance and refinement. It showcases Maruti Suzuki’s commitment to providing products aligned with customers aspirations. We are sure this new engine option will strengthen the popularity of Ertiga in the urban MPV segment.”
Design and features remain the same, the only change is the new engine and gearbox on offer. Talking about the engine, the DDiS 225 is developed in house by Suzuki, is a 1498cc four-cylinder mill which makes 95PS of power at 4,000 rpm and 225Nm of torque between 1,500 to 2,500rpm. It comes mated to a new 6-speed manual transmission. Compared to 1.3 motor it makes 5ps and 25Nm more torque and extra gear. This engine should improve driveability and highway performance of the Ertiga. Maruti claims a mileage of 24.20km/l. Which is marginally (1.27km/l) lower than the 1.3 motors.
Ertiga has been a consistent performer for Maruti after it has launched and has captured the amount of share of the MPV segment. It competes with the Mahindra Marazzo and Renault Lodgy in the MPV segment. It starts at a price of Rs 9.86 Lakhs for the Vdi variant, Zdi is priced at Rs 10.69 Lakhs and top of the line ZDi+ comes for Rs 11.20 Lakhs.
