Earlier, the second generation Mahindra Thar 4×4 was spotted testing in India and the boxy vehicle is again seen in Coimbatore. This time, the front fascia of the vehicle has been spotted which looks somewhat different from the first gen model. The previous-gen Thar was introduced in 2010, but the company has to soon replace it due to vulnerable safety features. The next-gen Thar is expected to hit the market by 2020.
Mahindra has started testing the vehicle on the road so that it can achieve good ratings at the crash test and meet the new BS6 emission norms. However, the future variant of the vehicle is assumed to be more durable compared to the upcoming model. The new variants will be built to offer high performance and more fuel economy. According to the spy shots, the new model 4×4 will be broader, longer and larger compared to the existing model.
The design of the new Thar is based on the Jeep CJ5 with a boxy appearance and fabric roof. The vehicle was partially camouflaged during the test, but the equipment was clearly visible. At the front, it gets a 7-slat grille highlighted with retro-styled, round headlamps. The production-ready vehicle gets indicators which are set on the front fenders. With some great tweaks, the company continues the “Jeep” appearance which is traditional yet popular.
Moving to the rear section, the vehicle has got new strong build up along with side tracks and a side-hinged tailgate. The vehicle was spotted with a testing kit attached at the rear. The main reason for the current Thar replacement is safety concerns. So, the company has made the new model with a solid ladder, similar to the all-new Mahindra Marazzo. The good news is that it will be also integrated with airbags and tons of safety features like front offset, side impact and pedestrian safety.
The upcoming Thar can draw power from a BS-VI compliant diesel powertrain which is assumed to be combined with a 4-wheel drive system highlighting locking differentials. The standard model will adopt a rear-wheel-drive configuration although, the company will also offer a 4×4 setup. The earlier spied images reveal that the vehicle will come with a completely modified interior. The existing model is sold at Rs 9.29 lakh (ex-showroom) so, expect the new model to be priced more than the current version.
