Thanks to our reader Himanshu Sandhilya for sharing these pictures with fellow motorheads. The next generation Mahindra Thar was caught testing again, this time in Hariyana. It is a known fact that Mahindra is working on the next generation Thar. What is new though is that the next generation Thar will get an all-new 2 Litre diesel engine. The New Thar will look more modern, but will also retain its original character.
Mahindra is currently developing the next generation Thar and is likely to be launched in 2020. The next generation Thar will be powered by a new 2 Litre diesel engine. The new diesel unit will be BS-VI emissions compliant. The 2.5L diesel engine at the heart of the current generation Thar develops 105hp and 247Nm. The new engine will get a bump in the power and torque figures. We expect the new Thar to make 140hp and north of 300Nm of torque.
The Thar, in its current avatar, is underpowered when compared to its only rival, the Force Gurkha. With the new engine, the Thar will match the power and torque figures of the Gurkha. The next generation Thar will be based on the all-new platform and we expect it to offer better comfort and drivability.
The suspension will be tuned for on-road use and with the increase in power and a wider track, the Thar will be highway friendly too. But, it comes with its price. The Gen3 Chassis on which the Thar will be based has about 10 percent less wheel articulation. This translates into reduced off-road capabilities than the current generation Thar, but we are reserving our comments until we get our hands on the finished product.
The next generation Thar will comply with the latest crash test norms and will come with airbags, ABS and rear parking sensors. The Gen3 chassis on which the Thar is built is fully crash compliant. This is the same chassis that underpins the Scorpio and the TUV range in the Mahindra stable.
