The trucks or the SUVs are so jacked up with armour and display a great example of when function and usability are more important over aesthetics. But even the aesthetic has some appeal to them, beefy, huge, having that military paint.

We have seen Tata making the majority of truck used by the army. But today we have something from Mahindra for you. Mahindra Armored Light Specialist Vehicle (ALSV), which is to be only used by defence forces and the military. The military vehicles are always designed in a modular format so they can be configured for different roles. Be it patrolling, or defence etc.

Specifications after this are gonna get a bit technical, but nevertheless interesting. The ALSV offers ballistic protection up to B7, STANAG Level II. Let’s make it easy STANAG II protection means protection over 6kg of a mine blast and protection against kinetic energy of 7.62×39mm API BZ at 30 meters with 695 m/s. Which means it can handle some rounds of fires without even sweating.

The front, side and rear are as per STANAG Level 1, you can upgrade it STANAG Level 2 protection. It has 400kgs cargo-carrying capability along with, space for 4 crewmembers and storage spaces for arms and ammunition. Some of the standard features in the ALSV are Multi-Layered Ballistic Glass, Air Filteration & Scavenging System, Public Address System, Run-flat System (As per Finabel 50km), Tire Inflation System and Clamshell Doors.

Powering this behemoth is a 3.2L, 6-cylinder direct injection diesel engine which makes 215HP at 3,600rpm and 500nm of torque at 3,000rpm. It is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. You get 4X4 along with differential locks for front and rear. Upfront you can see a winch and independent suspension at all wheels from Bilstein. Want to know about those big tyres? They are 17 inches 318/80 tyres.

The maximum speed is under 120kmph and it will take 12 seconds to reach 60kmph. it has 30-degree gradability along with 50kms run-flat system on all tyres. There are a lot of optional accessories such as In-Service GPS, Automatic grenade launcher, HF/VHF/UHF Radio, Medium Machine gun mount and Tactical command & control with mapping. Price? Us civilians will never know, it’s only for use of the Military and Defence forces.
