Kalyani Strategic Systems Ltd. is a subsidiary of Kalyani Group and specializes in developing military-grade vehicles for the Indian Army. They are now developing a new Light Strike Vehicle also known as an LSV. It is based on AM’s general platform similar to the iconic US Army’s HMMWV (aka Hummer).

The prototype of this vehicle was spotted testing on the Ahmedabad-Daman road. It looks like the prototype has armor but is seen sporting a soft top. All military vehicles prefer functionality over aesthetics and the same applies to this LSV too. It looks extremely rugged and built for combat scenarios.

The LSV can be kitted out as per the mission requirements. A basic protection pack offers ballistic protection against small arms fire. A heavier protection kit provides advanced protection against heavier weaponry and ambushes. The LSV can also be equipped with a remotely controlled weapon station. This can be armed with a 7.62mm or 12.7mm machine gun or a 40mm automatic grenade launcher.

The LSV measure approximately 5000mm in length, 2500mm in width and 2500mm in height. It also has a massive ground clearance of 300mm. The vehicle has a gross weight of about 4500 kilograms. This gives it enough room to add the heavier protection kits. The vehicle comes with two different wheelbases- 3.2m and 3.5m.

The new light strike vehicle uses a conventional C-section chassis but with longitudinal reinforcements and tubular cross-members to give the required torsional rigidity. It runs on a 140 KW(HP) powered engine coupled to an automatic or a mechanical gearbox with 6 forward gears and 1 reverse.

The light strike vehicle has a compact profile. This allows one vehicle to be carried inside a CH-47 helicopter, while a Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules transport aircraft can carry two vehicles internally. The vehicle will mainly be used as a modern warfighter catering to multiple mission profiles. It can also be used for surveillance, command and control, reconnaissance and liaison, and electronic warfare.
