With the fact that the future of mobility is electric being evident, many automakers are pushing to develop this technology. Now, the Indian motorcycle manufacturer Bajaj is co-developing a common electric two wheeler platform with the Austrian company KTM.
“We are developing prototypes across the bay, however, what will come out first is a question we will be addressed shortly. But it should happen this year,” said Rakesh Sharma, Executive Director, Bajaj Auto, speaking to Economic Times.
KTM recently agreed to develop a common 48-volt electric motor for Bajaj. This will be used in two-wheeler platforms with a power range of 3-10kw. This platform will support scooters and mopeds under both brands. Also, the production of all new vehicles under this new platform will happen in India, in Bajaj’s Pune plant. We can expect to see the first units roll out by 2022.
Does this mean we can expect a new KTM scooter? The company first showed interest in this concept back in the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show in the form of the E-Speed concept. If this is the case, we can expect the KTM version of this platform to cater to the more premium segment. The Bajaj version, on the other hand, will focus on the mass market. It is also worth noting that KTM was seen testing an electric Duke back in May 2017.
Both the companies will take advantage of the FAME II subsidy in India for electric vehicles. The new scooters from KTM and Bajaj will compete against the Ather scooter in India after launch.
