Kia Rio Gets A Major Upgrade - Hybrid Power Along With Updated Design

Kia Motors is doing extremely well in our country. But they also have a much wider range of vehicles in Europe and other countries. One such hatchback is Kia Rio which was initially bought for test rides in India before Kia stepped in here.

Now Kia Motors has introduced a facelift to 4th gen Kia Rio. It gets a new mild-hybrid powertrain and Kia’s first use of their ‘clutch-by-wire’ intelligent manual transmission (IMT). Kia Rio is an entry-level hatchback from Kia and starts in at €13,000 (Rs 10 Lakh). Talking about the design first, the front bumper gets some changes as it’s now lower wider and more aggressive-looking than before along with Kia’s signature ‘tiger-nose’ grille which looks very subtle.

Most of you are familiar with Kia UVO Connect. Rio will get ‘Phase II’ of that. You can connect two mobile devices with Bluetooth multi-connection, it also gets wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The ‘Phase II’ UVonnect will get Online Voice Recognition, weather forecasts and live traffic information, check the location and diagnostics of the vehicle.

Let’s talk about the new engines on offer. The ‘EcoDynamics+’ Powertrain is a combination of 1.0L T-GDi engine paired to a 48V Mild hybrid system. It has a Mild-Hybrid Starter-Generator (MHSG) unit which switched between ‘motor’ and ‘generator’ modes. So in ‘motor’ mode, the electric motor provides that extra power, and while braking it stores the energy in ‘generator’ mode. Although the power remains the same as 100ps and 120ps, the 120ps version gets 16 per cent higher torque at 200Nm.

The ‘clutch-by-wire’ is controlled electronically without any actual wire making it more efficient. The 1.0L T-Gdi engine will come mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. You will get another option of 1.2L NA engine with a power output of 84ps. Kia has included a plethora of safety questions including forwarding Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Driver Attention Warning (DAW), Blind-Spot Collision Warning (BCW), Lane Following Assist (LFA) and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA). And all of the usual ones including 6 airbags, ABS, ESC, and VSM.
