Jawa to unveil the Bobber styled motorcycle Perak on November 15th

Jawa is not just a brand but an emotion for many. The relaunch of Jawa motorcycles by Mahindra has everyone excited. But how does it fare against the modern day crowd favorite - the Royal Enfield 350? Let us begin by comparing the details of Jawa vs Royal Enfield. Design: Jawa does a good job at retaining the old retro charm. The Royal Enfield, on the other hand, have slightly evolved to more suit the modern needs. Jawa offers a relatively simpler design. It features clean lines all around. It gets round headlights, a chrome sided fuel tank with Jawa badging on them. The radiator and a nice belly pan also add up to the clean looking profile. The tear-drop shaped fuel tank cap and also the twin exhaust pipes are a nod to the original Jawa legacy. It further maintains the retro look with small tail lamps, spoked wheels and also a straight seat. The Royal Enfield Classic also does a good job at maintaining the retro charm.  Both the Jawa and the Royal Enfield have a similar base design. It features classic round headlights, spoked wheels, and chrome touches. But this motorcycle features a single floating type seat with an optional pillion seat in comparison to the straight single seat on the Jawa. The lack of a radiator and a belly pan makes the underside of this motorcycle a little too plain. Engine: The Jawa is powered by a 293cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine. This motor produces 27bhp and 28Nm of torque. Also, it comes mated to a 6-speed transmission. Looking at the numbers, the Jawa is significantly more powerful than the Royal Enfield Classic. The Royal Enfield Classic, on the other hand, runs on a 349cc air-cooled single-cylinder engine. This engine produces a more modest 19.8bhp power and 28Nm torque. This is paired with a 5-speed transmission. Both motorcycles have the same amount of torque. This translates to a similar riding experience in the city. But the extra horsepower and an additional gear cog put the Jawa ahead in terms of highway performance. Features: Being retro classics, both motorcycles have very few features to boast. The Jawa comes with 280mm front disc and 153mm rear drum brakes. The front disc brake gets a single-channel ABS as standard. It features telescopic front forks and dual spring-coils at the rear. The instrument console is a simple round dial with a fuel meter. Also, the dials read anticlockwise - appreciate the attention to retro detail here. It also has a digital screen for the time. The Royal Enfield Classic also shares similar features as the Jawa. It comes with a 280mm front disc and a 153mm rear drum brake. Royal Enfield also offers a 240mm rear disc with ABS as an option in a few variants. It runs on similar front telescopic forks and twin spring-coils at the rear. The instrument console is also very basic and features only a speedometer, odometer and an amp meter. The lack of a fuel gauge annoys many people while others think its a nice retro touch. Jawa vs Royal Enfield - verdict: Both the motorcycles are great in their own ways. Jawa is a perfect retro machine while the Royal Enfield manages to bring the best of both worlds. The Jawa is also faster the Royal Enfield. Both the motorcycles are also priced very close to each other, making this competition even harder. We feel Jawa is best suited for those looking for a perfect retro charm and feel. Classic Legends, the subsidiary of Mahindra and Mahindra brought the Legendary motorcycle Jawa back to life last year. They also had a surprise up their sleeve, The Perak – a bobber styled motorcycle. Finally, after almost a year of waiting, Jawa will unveil the Motorcycle on November 15th. While there not many bobbers on sale in India, the Jawa Perak would steal the title of being the “Most Affordable” bobber in India.

Enter the Perak

The Perak name is borrowed from the original Jawa Perak, which was showcased at 1946 Paris Motor Show. While the original Perak was a 250cc offering, the new motorcycle Perak uses a larger 334cc engine. It is a single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine that develops about 30hp and 31 Nm of peak torque. This engine will come paired to a six-speed gearbox.

The interesting bits about the bobber are the visual changes and the mechanical updates that differentiate it from the other Jawa Siblings. The bike is built on a double cradle chassis with a longer swingarm that gives the Perak, its distinctive and longer dimension than its siblings. While a pair of telescopic forks do the duty at the front, the rear suspension is a mono-shock unit. The rear suspension is neatly tucked under the cantilevered single seat. Rear disc brake with a dual-channel ABS will be standard equipment.

The Bobber is sure to stand out from the crowd with its distinctive looks. The bike also has ditched all the chrome bits in a bid to look more rugged on the roads. While the Perak was only showcased in Matt black, we can expect Jawa to add in more shades to the bobber. The 334cc engine is also expected to be a BS6 compatible unit and hence we expect it to be priced at around INR 2 Lakh (Ex-Showroom).
