Hyundai is planning to launch its electric SUV – Hyundai Kona in the month of July next year in the Indian markets. The Hyundai Kona electric SUV will reach the country through the CKD route as per the statement of the South Korean Automaker which reads that the Kona will be locally assembled at the company’s Chennai plant. The Kona SUV is retailed in the International auto markets with two powering options – one is petrol powered variant and the other is pure electric version. The South Korean Automaker had unveiled the Kona SUV last year and this electric vehicle was unveiled at the MOVE Global Mobility Summit as well.
The Hyundai Kona SUV is likely to the first electric SUV to be launched in India only if Mahindra and Mahindra does not introduce the KUV100 with pure electric power train in our country. The reports suggest that the Hyundai Kona will be priced below Rs 30 lakh. However, at this price range the buyers can easily get a high end conventional SUV. Therefore, the Hyundai Kona being a small SUV gets a high price tag. The reason for the steep price can be attributed to the powering by the advanced electric power train. When the South Korean automaker launches the Kona electric SUV in 2019, Hyundai will retail only 1000 units of the vehicle at its introduction. Further, the automaker will increase the production and availability of the Kona electric SUV in India depending on the customers’ demands.
Powering the Kona electric SUV is a 39.2 kWh battery good for 292 miles and can accelerate from 0 mph to 62 mph at only 7.6 seconds. The battery takes only 54 minutes to reach 80 percent charge on a 100 kW DC charger while it takes 9 hours 40 minutes for long range battery pack and 6 hours 10 minutes for short range battery pack for using the on – board 7.2 kW charger.
The Hyundai Kona electric SUV will be retailed through the outlets of the top ten metro cities of India. However, Hyundai states to further enhance the sales network across the country at the later stage. The other automakers, viz, Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra and Mahindra and Toyota along with the Hyundai are also working on the electric vehicle segment and plan to launch the electric vehicle in our country by 2019 or 2020.
