Genesis is the luxury car brand from Hyundai. The company is now evaluating the prospects of bringing this luxury brand to India. It also looks like Hyundai also wants to enter the Indian market with an SUV. Reports also suggest the brand has been looking at a possible India launch for a few years now. Looks like they are finally moving along with the decision.
Genesis is planning to add two SUVs to its roster – the GV80 and the GV70. The GV80 is based on the Hyundai Palisade/Kia Telluride SUV and is named after the Sedan G80 due to the similarities. The GV70, however, is based on the more affordable G70 and Kia Stinger underpinnings. Also, the GV70 shares its base with the Hyundai Tucson, which has an RHD offering. This makes the Genesis GV70 a more likely prospect for Indian markets.
Hyundai also wants to bring the SUV via the CKD route to offer competitive pricing. CKD avoids the extremely high taxes otherwise imposed on CBU units. We also know that the assembly capabilities for the Hyundai Tucson platform already exists here in India. This will put the car at an advantage from the pricing point of view compared to the rivals from Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo and also Lexus.
The GV70 is expected to run on a 2.0-liter four cylinder turbo making 241hp and a 3.3-liter twin turbo V6 which pumps out a whopping 365hp.
Even if Hyundai decides to go ahead with the plan to bring the luxury brand to India, the earliest we can expect to see them will be by late 2020 or early 2021. Hyundai may also exhibit the entire lineup at the 2020 Auto Expo to increase brand awareness.
