Honda is working on an all-new hatchback based on the fifth generation City. The first ever spy shots of a thickly camouflaged test vehicle have been taken in Thailand which gives us some hint about the new hatchback. The early patent images had already been leaked before. This hatchback is likely to replace Jazz in some markets, with a global debut in Thailand later this year.
The City hatchback features the same front styling as the Honda City sedan with large chrome insert on the front grille. The similarly persists up to the C-pillar. The sleeker tail lamps, sportier rear bumpers with vertical reflector strips and the obvious body styling distinguishes it from the City. Unlike other hatchbacks where the rear appears to have been chopped down from a sedan, this particular hatchback gets the job done neatly. Owing to a number of similarities, the hatchback is likely to carry forward the same interior and similar feature list as on the sedan. The test car had a shark fin antenna, a roof spoiler and black alloy wheels.
Coming to the powertrain, the City hatchback will most likely get the same 1.0 litre 4 cylinder VTEC turbo petrol engine as on the sedan that produces 120 bhp and 173 Nm of peak torque, mated to a 7 step CVT. As the hatchback will be offered in markets ranging from China to South East Asia as well as South America, Honda may also plonk a 1.5 litre iVTEC naturally aspirated 4 cylinder petrol engine that produces 113 bhp and 145 Nm of peak torque.
Currently, Honda seems to have no plans of bringing this superb hatchback to India. That said, we will continue to have the BS6 compliant Jazz in India. The new generation Honda City will enter the Indian market soon. Honda has also confirmed that the current City will be sold alongside the upcoming generation.
