Trump's Visit Makes Harley Davidson Bikes Cheaper - Reduced Import Duty

President Trump is all over the news on his visit to India. And with all the excitement amongst the people of India, we also have good news for fellow bikers. Your dream to get Harley Davidson bikes will soon get more affordable as Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hopefully slash the import duty to “single digits”.

Why is that a big deal? Because as of today the import duty for CBU (Completely Built Unit) for the bike is 50%!. And this figure is only after it was slashed from 100% in 2019, again courtesy Donald Trump. US President convinced PM Narendra Modi to reduce the import duty by half on just a telephonic conversation. Even though Trump was not satisfied and called the cut “too high” and “not acceptable” and also said about increasing duty on India-made motorcycles.

So finally, the import duty on CBU bikes which have engine unit bigger than 1600cc is said to be reduced to a single digit. However, there’s a catch, even if the import duty comes down to under 10%, it won’t help potential customers. Most of the top-selling Harley Davidson in India come via CKD(Completely Knocked Down) Unit. And India recently has increased the customs duty for CKD units from 10% to 15%. So it might only benefit the top of the line Harley Davidson bikes which come as a CBU and have more than 1600cc. In fact, most selling Street 750 is even made in India.

Harley Davidson sold 2,496 motorcycles in 2019 in India. So with the import duty cut, this figure can bost more in upcoming years. Also, this slash will also help other brands like Triumph and India Motorcycle. Harley Davidson bike lineup in India ranges from Rs 5.54 Lakh to Rs 50.53 Lakh.
