Looks like the Coronavirus outbreak does not seem to stop anytime soon. As it keeps affecting more and more countries, the effect has been also been showing upon industries including the automotive sector. The latest instance being the cancellation of Geneva Motor Show 2020.
Switzerland has been the home to one of the most anticipated Geneva Motor show. This year the motor show was set to start from 5 March 2020, but it has been cancelled due to Covid-19 (Coronavirus). The decision was taken by the Federal Council which states that no event with more than 1,000 people will be allowed to take place until 15th march 2020. As Geneva Motor show is one of the biggest Auto Show, the number of visitors would have been way more than 1,000 people.
It came in the last moment as 3 days after the show was going to start for the Media. Even our own AutoExpo 2020 suffered few issues due to the Coronavirus and major Chinese brands coming into India. Maurice Turrettini, Chairman of the Foundation Board commented “We regret this situation, but the health of all participants is our and our exhibitors’ top priority. This is a case of force majeure and a tremendous loss for the manufacturers who have invested massively in their presence in Geneva. However, we are convinced that they will understand this decision,”.
People who bought the tickets will get a refund. But the major loss is for the manufacturers who were all prepped up for new launches during the show. Also, there are little to none chances of rescheduling of the show. So manufactures will have to find the other way round and host online events to showcase their products.
