Bavarian Motor Works has come up with their latest SUV for India. The fourth generation BMW X5 has been launched with a starting price of Rs 72.90 Lakhs which goes all the way up to 82.4 Lakhs.
The new BMW X5 is bigger in every dimension than the previous generation, and it even has a longer wheelbase. It is based on the like BMW’s CLAR platform. Except for the sheer size, there are many other new exterior changes and features added to the new BMW X5.
The front looks bold and big with BMW’s signature kidney grille finished in chrome. As with time BMW is making bigger and bigger kidney grilles and people seem to have mix opinion about it, though on the X5 they look great. The headlight gets a new BMW Laserlight with X shaped element which looks stunning, and also offer superior range and night visibility. The air intakes up front on the sides are large and also house the LED fog lamp in them. The Side profile looks bold with character lines and S shape swing running along till tail lamps.
Things get interesting when you get to the rear. The Full LED tail lamp unit is all new and looks mature and elegant. The tailgate is another interesting bit which has two part electric opening. The lower part can also be used as a seat in some situations, which means it can bear the load of a person sitting on it.
Interiors feature generous use of high-quality leather and wood all over the cabin. The seats are covered in ‘Vernasca’ leather which is fully adjustable electronically. Dual 12.3-inch touchscreens are on offer, one for the infotainment system and another one for the instrument cluster. The infotainment system gets the BMW i-Drive system, and music system comes from Harman Kardon Surround Sound System. A total of 16 speakers, along with 464 W digital Amplifier.
Panoramic Glass Roof is big enough to keep both rows occupant happy, it also features an atmospheric night light with 15,000 light elements and six ambient colours to choose from. The light show is not only for the roof, but the SUV also features Ambient light and Ambient contour light on the doors with six colours – White, Blue, Orange, Bronze, Lilac and Green. The gear level looks astonishing finished in Clarity Glass, even the iDrive controller and Start/Stop button is finished in Crystal Glass. Automatic air conditioning along with 4 zone climate control.
BMW X5 comes with both diesel and petrol offerings. The diesel motor is a 3.0 litre, inline-six diesel motor that makes around 265ps and an impressive 620Nm of torque. While petrol is also a six-cylinder motor that makes 340ps and 450Nm of torque. Both the engines are mated to an 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. It also gets an xDrive All-wheel drive system which sends power to all the four wheels when required. The Adaptive 2-axle air suspension offers superior ride quality and can even lower or raise the car height with a touch of a button.
Along with all this BMW offers some smart features on the SUV. BMW Head’s up DIsplay which provides all the information up front in the Driver’s line of sight. Reverse and parking Assistant, former one keeps track of the last 50m travels so the SUV can backtrack if needed. Three colour options are on offer – Black Sapphire, Mineral White and Phytonic Blue.
With a starting price of Rs 72.90 Lakhs (ex-showroom pan India), BMW X5 is up there to rival with Audi Q7, Mercedes-Benz GLE and Volvo XC90. After the latest generation update, the BMW X5 is a much more competent rival.
