Before the launch the Indo-Japanese manufacturer had kept his audience busy with a series of videos, teasing his car, on the official channel. Initially the new generation Ertiga had been showcased at the 2018 Indonesian Motor Show, and is already on the sale in some selected ASEAN market. It’s been some 6 years, since the first generation of the Ertiga had been released and sold some 4.2 lakh units since and hence the customers were eagerly waiting for the young one to be launched. Bookings for the car were already opened both online and offline earlier this month, at just the meager amount of Rs 11000. The company and its suppliers have invested some 900 crores for the development of the Ertiga 2018.

The diesel variant of the Ertiga 2018 runs on the same 1248 cc, 4 cylinder, 4 valved, DOHC 16 V D13A MJD engine, giving a power output of 88.5 hp at 4000 rpm and a torque of 200 Nm at 1750 rpm. The car is going to have a 6 speed manual transmission system. Its compression ratio is 17.6:1. The bore is 69.6 mm and the stroke is 82 mm. The Petrol 1.5 liter K15B, VVT, 4 cylinder engine making 108.26 hp at 6000 rpm and 138 Nm at 4400 rpm, borrowed from the Ciaz facelift, and a mild SHVS hybrid with lithium ion battery will also be on offer. The transmission system paired to the petrol engine will be a 6 speed MT and a four speed torque converter automatic transmission system will also be on board for only petrol variant.
The hybrid will be equipped with torque assist function, which will reduce stress on the engine and be utterly fuel efficient. The fuel efficiency if the hybrid is further increased by the idle start stop function, which will automatically turn the engine off when the car is idle and turn it on when the optimal conditions are met. The brake energy regeneration function is the base behind the above-mentioned features, as when the vehicle decelerates, the hybrid technology charges the battery itself, enabling the torque assist and idle start stop functions.
The MPV or lovingly called LUV (Life Utility Vehicle) is based on the HEARTECT platform, which it shares with the Swift hatchback and the Dzire subcompact sedan. AC vents will be connected on the passenger side, and the floating SmartPlay 17.8 cm touchscreen infotainment system, with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Mirror Link connectivity, will be remarkable. The steering wheel will be a leather wrapped flatbottomed one. Comfort of the passengers are not neglected it seems, as all the three rows of seats are getting adjustable headrests, along with a air cooled twin cup holder in the third row and a 12 V charging socket. Spacious legroom, shoulder space and luggage area just confirms my previous statement. A two stage boot floor is also included in the package in order to provide increased capacity. One touch recline and slide mechanism makes the third row easily accessible. The second row has a 60:40 split whereas the third one has a 50:50 split. The interiors are plush dual tone adorned with a maplewood finished, sculpted dashboard with chrome accent and multi colour MID display.
The dimensions, as far as is concerned, are 4395 mm in length (which is 99 mm longer than the previous one), 1735 mm in width and 1690 mm in height (5 mm taller than the first gen model). The wheelbase is 2740 mm with a 185 mm ground clearance. The boot space is a generous 209 liters (increased by 50%) that can be expanded upto 803 liters when the third row is folded, followed by an equally decent fuel tank capacity of 45 liters. The estimated mileage for the petrol variant is 18 kmpl and the diesel one is 25-27 kmpl. The car will be available in pearl metallic auburn red wich is a new addition to, metallic magma grey, pearl metallic oxford blue, pearl arctic white and metallic silky silver.
The styling and designing of the Ertiga 2018 is expected to be much bolder than its predecessor. The shape of the car can be somewhat compared to a mini Innova Crysta. The bold chrome grille, floating roof design, projector headlamps with LED DRLs, alloy wheels with a classy look,3D LED taillamps and bold character lines definitely gives the car a unique and elegant look and makes it stand out. What less can be expected of a direct rival of the Mahindra Marazzo? The boxy profile MPV will although come at a lesser asking than the Marazzo. Also. A crossover version of the Ertiga can be expected at some later stage too. All in all the car definitely goes with its tagline, “Move in style”.
The safety features have been taken care of too, with dual airbags, high speed warning alert, front seat belt with pre tensioners and force limiters, ISOFIX child seat anchorages, ABS with EBD, rear parking camera and brake assist and reverse parking sensors as standard. However the car has missed out on an important aspect the rear airbags.

The price of the Ertiga 2018 with petrol manual variant is Rs. 7.44 lakhs for the LXi, Rs. 8.16 lakhs for the VXi, Rs. 8.99 lakhs for the ZXi and Rs. 9.50 lakhs dor the ZXi+ trims. On the other hand the diesel manual variant will be available for Rs. 8.84 lakhs for LDi, Rs. 9.56 lakhs for VDi, Rs. 10.39 lakhs for ZDi and Rs. 10.90 lakhs for the ZDi+ trims.
