Japan is known for making tiny sports cars that actually pack a serious punch. Now Toyota’s Gazoo Racing division has taken the Daihatsu Copen GR Sport and given it a complete makeover. This new roadster is a tiny, fun car for the entry-level performance car segment of Toyota.
Exactly how small is it? To start with, it is just a 2-seater. It runs on a tiny 660cc turbo three-cylinder engine. This motor produces 63bhp of power and also 92Nm of torque. How can it be a sports car with such a small engine? The weight of the car makes the effective power of the car higher than the actual power figure on paper. These types of cars are called Kei-cars (light-automobile) in Japan. The power from the teeny-tiny engine goes to the front wheels through a 5-speed manual or a 7-speed automatic gearbox. There is also a CVT option available.
The new Daihatsu Copen GR sports car gets a sharp front bumper with side air intakes, a large front grille, BBS forged aluminium wheels, and also a rear bumper with a diffuser. It also features LED headlights, LED fog lights, and LED taillights. It is also a convertible. On the interior, we can see Recaro seats with the GR logo, and also a MOMO leather-wrapped steering wheel to maintain the sporty aesthetics.
However, this unique car is only exclusive to the Japanse market. But, we can totally see such a small and powerful sports car being a lot of fun on Indian roads too. Heads up Toyota if you are reading this, we would love to see such cars here.
