In a recently concluded Annnual General Meeting, Tata Group Chairman N Chadrasekaran has confirmed that Tata Motors will launch 4 new EVs over next 18 months. They will be electric version of The Altroz, The Nexon and improved Tiago. The fourth electric vehicle remains a mystery for now.
While Tata had showcased the electric version of the Altroz at the Geneva Motor Show, they were tight lipped about other EVs. With the Government pushing for electric vehicles, it is only natural for Indian Manufacturers to take the electric route. The electric Nexon could be launched near the 2020 festive season, when it will be ready for a mid life face lift.
What is expected out of the Nexon EV?
The electric power train could be shared amongst the Altroz and the Nexon EVs. The Altroz EV should be good enough for a 250-300 Km range with a single charge. The Nexon, with the same power train could offer a little lesser range owing to the kerb weight. The battery pack will be a lithium-ion unit.
As with the prices, the Tigor EV is priced at 9.99 Lakhs. Going with this, the Nexon EV and the Altroz could be priced on the higher side. But we expect the subsidy under the FAME II scheme, GST cut and the tax concession to balance the scale to be affordable. Visually, there will be some changes to the Electric siblings in comparison to the IC engined ones. We expect a closed grille, re-profiled bumper and drag reducing wheels.
The Nexon EV will go against the XUV 300 EV. As with the Altroz EV, there is no EV in that particular segment. With Maruti already testing Hybrid Baleno and the fully electric Wagon R, we expect other automakers to join the bandwagon of the electric vehicles soon.
