BMW has officially confirmed the upcoming of the X3 M and X4 M after years of rumours and spy videos. The first showing of the BMW X3 M and X4 M took place today at the Nurburgring in Germany ahead of the DTM racing event this weekend. BMW took both the SUVs out under heavy camouflage to show us what we can expect when the SUVs make their official debut. However, due to heavy camouflage the looks of both the SUVs were not much clear but the company has confirmed about its new engine and the M xDrive transmission.
The X3 M and the X4 M SUVs are set to use the M xDrive transmission. The auto maker confirmed it by saying: “part of the development process is the specific tuning of the M xDrive technology introduced for the first time in the new BMW M5. This technology is deployed in the BMW X3 M and BMW X4 M to ensure constant supreme and performance-oriented transfer of engine power to all four wheels.”
Therefore the X3 M and the X4 M are the first SUVs to come with the M xDrive technology. The M xDrive technology allows one to choose where the power goes. Frank van Meel, BMW M president, said: “With their M specific performance characteristics, the BMW X3 M and BMW X4 M will set benchmarks in terms of dynamics in their respective vehicle segment.” Moreover, the confirmation of the M xDrive system will probably make both the upcoming Super SUVs as ones in the world in which one can send all their power to the rear axle while on the track.
The auto maker has not yet confirmed the specs or the codename of the upcoming SUVs but said “the technological highlight of the BMW X3 M and X4 M is a newly developed straight six-cylinder engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and high-revving characteristics.” This new engine will not only power the X3 M and X4 M SUVs but also will power the other upcoming M cars from the company.
The upcoming X3 M and X4 M SUVs will come with a range of bespoke performance components like special suspension with beefed-up chassis bracing, big brakes and a unique aero kit for the exterior. There is no statement yet about the full debut of both the upcoming SUVs. However, the company confirms the development process is already well under way. When launched, the X3 M and X4 M SUVs with compete on the likes of Alfa Romeo Stelvio QV, the new Jaguar F-PACE SVR and Mercedes AMG GLC 63.
