BMW has gone official with the latest offering of its 3 Series sedan car. This is the seventh generation of the car and promises enhanced sportiness, a new design language, and extensive refinements. BMW Revealed the all-new 3 Series at the Paris auto show. BMW has sold more than 15 million 3 Series since 1975. 3 series is one of the main three contenders of small sporty sedan Segment.
There’s lot to talk about the new version as the list of new features is rather long. BMW is using as much as six engine variants in the car from launch including four-cylinder gas and diesel offerings along with a 6-cylinder diesel unit. Power output Varies from 150hp to 265hp. An all-wheel drive is also offered. The six-cylinder 3 Series, the M340i. With 382hp and 500Nm of torque.
From the outside, the new car is 85 millimeters longer than its predecessor (at 4,709mm), 16 millimeters wider (1,827mm) and just 1 mm taller (1,442 millimeters). Also, the wheelbase has been extended by 41 millimeters to 2,851mm, as has its track widths (front: by 43mm, and rear by 21mm). A more aggressive and bold new kidney grille, sharp headlights and, resigned bumpers. The car is 25% more rigid but also lighter, weighing 55kg less than the previous generation.
In the inside the car comes with interior Ambient Lighting, reversing camera and latest generation reversing assistant, electric folding rear view mirrors, three-zone air conditioning, LED headlights, and enhanced acoustic glazing. The standard stereo offers 100 watts, the cost-extra Harman Kardon hi-fi ups that to 464 watts.
Coming to the tech-savvy features BMW has got loads of them. Like drivers use Their smartphone instead to unlock the vehicle and start it, by placing the phone in a wireless charging tray. Once underway, the car can automatically keep a set distance from the car in front and it helps drivers stick to a lane in tight roadwork channels.
In stop-and-go traffic, it can restart from a standstill on its own. It can also auto-reverse as far as 50 meters, by remembering its exact path after recording steering movements. BMW’s also incorporated a new Siri-like voice assistant, all you need to utter is ‘Hey BMW’.
The “array of advanced driver assistance systems takes the new BMW 3-Series sedan further along the road to automated driving than any of its rivals,” BMW said in a statement.
As always the new 3 Series is engaging to drive. The weight balance is 50:50 front-to-rear. Use of aluminum in suspension particularly in unsprung components. And there are M Sport and Adaptive M suspension options as well.
For safety, it features Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) with ABS and Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), and the Start-Off Assistant. There are 17-inch light-alloy wheels while the M Sport models feature unique 18-inch alloy wheel and optional 19-inch light-alloy wheels are available. Boot capacity of 480 litres which can be extended when the rear seats are folded down.
While the industry is turning towards electric vehicles, BMW is not offering the new 3-Series as a battery-only car. A plug-in hybrid version is due for coming months with an electric driving range of 60 kilometers (37 miles).
BMW’s new 3 series is better, bigger and has more tech than the outgoing model. It rivals cars like Mercedes E-Class, Audi A4, and Jaguar XE.
