Looks like Bajaj Auto is planning to relaunch the classic Bajaj Chetak scooter. But, this time as an all-electric scooter called the Bajaj Chetak Chic. It is expected to launch under the Urbanite brand on 16th October. The scooter is expected to be priced at Rs 1 lakh and will go up against the likes of the Ather 450.
The new Chetak will be launched in phases starting with Pune and Bengaluru. Launch in phases is important as EVs are still for a niche audience and not a mass-market product. It is also slightly on the premium side. Pune is closest to Bajaj’s manufacturing plant and hence the company has included it in the initial launch. Bengaluru, on the other hand, is turning out to be a hub for electric vehicles. Ather was also first launched in this city. So, it only makes sense to include it in the initial launch phase.
The new Bajaj Chetak Chic will sport a modern design with a retro charm. Bajaj is trying to retain the retro charm as much as possible. It gets rounded headlamps which is an all LED unit. It also looks like the scooter has a split seat setup, reminiscent of the old Chetaks. The company is also calling the event ‘Humara Kal’ (Our past) to remind people of the scooter’s rich history. The event will be attended by Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways and Amitabh Kant, CEO, Niti Aayog.
