Recently Maruti Suzuki shared the sales figures of August 2020 and they were remarkable. Not only did they performed better than July 2020 but even 17% better than August 2019. Now today we have the sales figure of all the 14 major manufacturers in India, and all of them have a similar story. An overall positive figures for the industry.
From Tata Motors registering the highest growth to Toyota with the largest downfall, let’s talk about the numbers. Also except for Volkswagen, all the manufacture reported some positive numbers in MoM figures. While we already have a separate article about Maruti Suzuki, they captured a 48.3% market share this year. While Fiat has the lowest market share of just 0.2%.
Hyundai seems to have hold of the SUV segment in their hands. Venue becomes the best selling compact SUV with 8,267 units, while Creta became the best-selling SUV with 11,758 units. While even the i10 Grand bought in some good numbers and sold 10,190 units. Hyundai saw a growth of 19.9% compared to last year and sold a total of 45,809 units.
Now our homegrown manufacturers, Tata and Mahindra, Tata sold 18,583 units and shows a staggering growth of 154% compared to last year’s August. Key vehicles being the New Harrier and Altroz, Harrier shows a growth of 167% while the Altroz sold 4,951 units. While Nexon and Tiago bringing decent sales. While Mahindra only showed an increase of 2%, the top seller being the Bolero and age-old Scorpio. TUV 300 sold zero units, while the new Thar should bring up sales once it’s available.
Hyundai’s sister company Kia sold 10,853 units and comes to 5th position with just 2 Cars. With 10,655 units sold of the Seltos alone, the remaining 198 units of the Carnival. Renault has some positive figures with a 41.3% increase with Triber and Kwid bringing up some sales, while the Duster still manages to sell 477 units, the numbers should go up with a new turbo engine variant.
Honda, Toyota, and Ford showed a decline over the previous year. For Honda, CR-V just sold 10 units, while Amaze and WR-V did not perform well. Toyota saw decrease n sales of Glanza, Innova, and the Camry. While the Ford Figo sold only 186 units with a decline of 79% over the last year.
While the story for other manufacturer remains the same Volkswagen, Skoda, Nissan, and Fiat. All of them are struggling to sell cars. Fiat is just selling the Jeep Compass, sales might increase after the facelift. While Skoda only sold 9 Octavia and 0 Kodiaq this month. For Volkswagen T-ROC sold more than the Vento with 227 units. Nissan has stopped selling Micra and Sunny, and is just selling Redi-G, Go+, Go, and Kicks. While more than 50% of their sales come from Redi-Go.
We are glad that the India automobile market is recovering and overall we have positive MoM numbers from manufactures and even yearly growth compared to August 2019. While Maruti and Hyundai lead the market, Fiat, Renault, Volkswagen-Skoda need to think about their strategy.
