Another year-end and we are already looking upon the things 2019 has to offer. We even have information about the upcoming launches that will happen in 2019. The industry is moving at a faster pace then it used to a few years back. Cars are much safer, faster and feature loaded now. And the future looks brighter than ever.
So with all that action happening in the industry, let’s just take a moment to go through the Top 5 Car launched this year! Right from the little Hyundai Santro to the big Alturas SUV.
Yes, you’ve heard the name, everybody in India has. It was one of the most successful cars from Hyundai. Gave great competition to a lot of Maruti’s in the segment. But sadly Hyundai discontinued it. Well, 2018 saw the iconic Santro coming back.
The same tall boy design with modern looks and features. Hyundai fluidic design does its job right and the new Santro looks good. It gets a host of new features like rear AC vents, black and beige treatment, 7-inches touchscreen with Bluetooth, MirrorLink and inbuilt GPS, smartphone connectivity, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The Santro gets a 4 cylinder 1.1 Litre engine unit producing 69bhp and 99Nm of torque, it comes mated to a 5-speed transmission. It also comes as CNG as an option.
Santro starts from Rs 3.90 lakh for the base variant and goes up to Rs 5.45 Lakh (ex-showroom). After the launch, it has already started doing its magic as Hyundai reported its highest ever sales in October.
2. Maruti Suzuki Swift
Yet another household name, chances are if you go out on the streets you’ll see one. Always in the top 5 selling cars in India. Maruti launched the Dzire back in 2017 and 2018 saw the launch of one of the most successful hatchbacks in India. The 3rd generation Swift designed on a new platform called “HEARTECT” light-weight platform same as used in Baleno.
The all-new Swift gets all new projector headlamps with Led same as the Dzire. The interior is sporty black instead of beige treatment on the Dzire. The new Swift has given up the Chrome surrounding at front grille and the car looks sporty with single piece matte black grille. Wrapped around taillights are complementing the new design up front. Rear door handle at the top of the door which is a little unconventional position but looks good. Interior is same as the Dzire except for controls for the automatic climate control which looks more modern.
Nothing new about the engines here. Both petrol and diesel mills are carried forward from the 2nd generation swift. But the new Swift is a bit faster than the previous one due to losing 80kg of weight. Petrol motor is 1197cc 4-cylinder which generates 82bhp and 113Nm of torque. Diesel gets a 1248cc 4-cylinder turbocharged engine producing 190Nm of torque and 74 bhp of power both the variants are mated to a 5-speed manual and AMT Gearbox.
Swift is priced at Rs 4.99 Lakhs for the base variant. After the launch, Swift has been doing its regular 20000+ sales every month and ruling its segment.
3. Honda Amaze
The Honda Amaze also came this year to bring up the heat in the compact sedan segment. The new Honda Amaze looks very different from its previous generation, as a whole new car. It looks quite boxy with a huge flat grille up front. At the rear, it gets a prominent boot lip and elongated tail lights.
In the interior Honda has given Amaze a beige black treatment. A new infotainment system DIGIPAD 2.0 and the multi-function steering with Paddle Shift, Voice Command, Audio, Handsfree and Cruise Control. And a big 420L boot to accommodate your weekend luggage.
The Amaze gets one of the nicest Diesel and CVT combos. It’s the same engine from previous Amaze but with CVT option. A 1.5-litre diesel churning out 99bhp and 200nm of torque comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and a sweet 7-step CVT automatic. It also gets 1.2-litre petrol making 89bhp and mated to a manual and automatic gearbox.
The new Honda Amaze starts at Rs 5.6 Lakhs (ex-showroom). After the Launch, the Amaze has been doing very good for Honda. Setting a record in sales figure for Honda with selling 10,180 units.
4. Mahindra Marazzo
MPV vehicles are still holding its own in India. There were always be a need for a car that can ferry more than 5 people around and still be practical than a big SUV. That can make your weekend getaways fun & easy.
This segment has always been dominated by the Toyota Innova and Maruti Ertiga at different price brackets. Mahindra slotted the Marazzo right in between them. A premium and better offering over the Ertiga and doing everything as good as the Innova?
Inspired by the Shark the Marazzo looks bold and premium. Powered by a new 1.5-litre diesel engine producing 123 PS and 300 Nm of torque mated to a 6-speed gearbox. With a claimed fuel efficiency of 17.6kmpl. It also gets premium interiors like a roof-mounted air-con system for all the rows, LED DRLs, projector headlamps, cornering lamps, 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and 17-inch machined alloy wheels.
The car also gets standard safety features such as dual front airbags, industry-first disc brakes on all four wheels, ABS, ISOFIX child seat mounts and impact sensitive door locks. Priced at a competitive Rs 9.99 Lakhs Marazzo proves to be a good buy. It sold around 3,810 units in October.
5.Mahindra Alturas G4
This time Mahindra came with their lesson learned. They understood the impact of brand value as for how it can make or break a product. A Mahindra Alturas G4 sounds much more trustworthy, familiar and a safe option to go for, but when you listen SsangYong Rexton it doesn’t click that much.
Mahindra Alturas G4 is the second generation of SsangYong Rexton under Mahindra’s badging. The new Mahindra Alturas G4 is all about bulk and road presence. The sharp lines & roofline provide definition to the SUV. The front of the SUV features a simple yet bold grille. It also has HID headlights and LED DRLs. The overall stance of the SUV is a little boxy. The Alturas G4 has the longest wheelbase of the segment.
The interiors of the Alturas G4 feels premium and well designed. The cabin is finished in brushed aluminium, real leather, and faux wood. The seats get a quilted leather finish. It features an 8-inch touchscreen in the centre console. This supports both Apple Carplay and Android auto and also comes with a reverse parking camera. In addition to this, there is also a 7-inch multi-information display in the instrument cluster.
The Mahindra Alturas G4 runs on a 2.2-litre diesel engine. This produces 178 hp at 4,000 rpm and 420Nm torque. This engine is mated to a 7-speed torque converter automatic gearbox which is sourced from Mercedes-Benz and a 4 wheel drive system.
The Mahindra Alturas G4 scored 5-star rating in the K-NCAP, it is priced at Rs 26.95 lakh(ex-showroom).
