The B-Segment. A busy segment with affordable cars for the mass market and one where the manufacturers fight tooth and nail for supremacy. Maruti Suzuki has been dominating the segment with the Swift. The Swift was a runaway success for Maruti when it was launched and it continues to do so till date. Then came along Ford, with the Figo in 2010. A strong competitor for the Swift. The last person to join the party was Hyundai, with the Grand i10.
To be successful and continue to dominate, you need to evolve. That’s what the manufacturers do. The swift received a major facelift in 2018 and so did the Figo, in 2015 and the latest iteration in 2019. The Grand i10 too received a handful of updates during its run. These three cars continue to set the sales chart on fire in this segment.
Let’s compare these rivals to see how they fare with each other.
2019 Ford Figo Vs Rivals: Exteriors
The 2019 iteration of the Figo gets a host of cosmentic upgrades. The front gets a new “Cellular” grille as Ford calls it and new C shaped fog lamp housings. The Titanium BLU variant gets a contrasting black grille, black roof and blue inserts on the fog lamp housing. There are very minimal changes to the rear, limited only to a re-designed bumper. The BLU variant gets the Blue badging and black striping work on the sides and the rear hatch.
With the 2018 update, the Swift gets only better. The front houses a hexagonal grill with horizontal black slats. No chrome dressing here like the older one. The sweptback headlamps are more angular than the outgoing model. The rear gets LED tail lamp units, but the indicator and reversing are still halogen units. Surprisingly, Maruti has kept the usage of chrome to the minimum leading to a more mature look on the Swift. The rear bumper also loses on the center placed fog lamp.
The Hyundai Grand i10 carries forward the fluidic design language very well with the 2017 update it received. The front houses a large hexagonal, cascading grill with minimal chrome work. The bumper at the front also houses newly designed fog lamp housings. They also now house LED DRLs. The cascading grill design and the pronounced fog lamp housings break the otherwise boring monotony at the front. The rear gets dual tone bumpers with that house the circular rear for lamps. The use of chrome on the Grand i10 is very restricted.
